Kwon Sang Swoon

If someone was to ask me what my all-time Korean movie would be, I would now have a difficulty choosing only one. My Sassy Girl (MSG) is special in the sense that it was the first ever Korean movie I watched. But that does not make it a notch higher than My Tutor/ Friend (MTF).

A colleague recently returned my DVD of MTF and I didn't realise until then how much I missed it. Since then, I had watched it thrice, not counting the single night I watched it twice.

MTF is another take on the genre or storyline popularised by MSG. This time though, the guy, played by Kwon Sang Woo (KSW), is the toughie.

KSW plays cuteness to the hilt here and he gets away with it (leaving me and all other girls swooning in his wake). He plays Ji-hoon, who, at 21 is still in secondary school. His parents hire a tutor for him, Su-wan, played by Kim Ha-neul (KHN) (yehey, I am getting better at Korean names without having to consult Kaytee or Google!).

KSW is a brat who had spent time in America and obviously does not enjoy the thought of getting tutored. On their first meeting, he told Su-wan he does not care if she is 21 because he is 21 too and he was born in March, making him older than her.

Su-wan is no pushover, but when she sees Ji-hoon fighting single-handedly a pack of bullies from his school, she starts to get scared being alone with him. This leads to more comical results as the two of them pit wits to see who quits first. Su-wan of course needs the money for her tuition while Ji-hoon is doing it for the sake of his father who wants him to graduate from high school. Of course his father does not know that Ji-hoon spends much of the two hours of tutor time bullying Su-wan or partying with his friends.

One time, Ji-hoon sneaks into his bedroom through the window with a deep cut on his stomach after a run-in with a gang in the billiard hall. Su-wan treats him and he slowly changes his opinion about his tutor that he had derisively called "country chick". He even asks her what her shampoo was, to which she replies she only uses soap.

The moment is cut short though because the police arrive to arrest Ji-hoon. His father soon decides to send him back to the US and when Ji-hoon refuses, wipes his son of his credit cards. Ji-hoon runs away and Su-wan continues to go to his house to fill in the hours.

One time, Su-wan finds him there and before Ji-hoon could run away, they had to face his parents. Ji-hoon says he will raise his average to 50 just so his father won't send him back to the US. Su-wan tells him she is not a miracle worker to help him raise his average from eight to 50. When she says she would dance in their school's festival if and when he gets a 50-average, he jumps on the challenge for the sheer fun of it.

And yes, he does attain a 50.1 average so Su-wan has no choice but to dance. And she actually does it well that the audience responds to her performance quite well. Seeing this, Ji-hoon gets "jealous" and walks out of the performance. When he takes her home, he told her that if she had to dress like that ("that" being a skimpy blouse revealing her navel and a stripped skirt), she might as well had gone naked.

Most of the funny moments are in their dialogues:

Scene: Inside Ji-hoon's room. Su-wan finds Ji-hoon in his room after some time since he ran away. She tells him that she is his guardian angel, after which, she strikes a pose in front of him.
Su-wan: Now, do I still look like a country chick?
Ji-hoon: (looking bored) No, her sister.

Scene: Outside Su-wan's house after she danced at her school festival and after he told her she might as well have danced naked. Su-wan starts to talk toward her house.
Ji-hoon: (in characteristic bruteness) Hey, are you doing something this weekend?
Su-wan: None of your business.
Ji-hoon: C'mon, just tell me. I know you won't be doing anything anyway.
Su-wan: Our club is going to the orphanage. Why?
Ji-hoon: Is that bastard going? (Referring to Su-wan's long-time "love", who is about to enter the priesthood.)
Su-wan: Do you think I'd be going if he's not going?
Ji-hoon: Hey! What kind of volunteer attitude is that?!

In the next scene, Ji-hoon is shown washing bed linen at the orphanage as he watches Su-wan and her group arrives. It was that time that the "bastard" (I forgot his name) revealed to Su-wan that he was entering the priesthood.

Out of sheer loyalty, Ji-hoon hunts the poor guy down. He slaps and punches the guy, demanding the he tells him who the "other girl" is.
Ji-hoon: C'mon tell me! Who is it?
Guy: I think there has been a misunderstanding. It's not a girl.
Ji-hoon: What do you mean?!
Guy: I'm going to be a father soon (father meaning he is going to be a priest).
Ji-hoon: (losing his temper) You bastard! You already have a kid!

At the guy's ordination into priesthood, Ji-hoon joins Su-wan and the scene at the church courtyard afterwards wherein they lie on the fallen leaves of autumn is just simply beautiful. (The scene was shot overhead and zooming in on them.)

To cheer her up, Ji-hoon takes Su-wan skydiving and it is while they are up in the air that he tells her he likes her. Of course Su-wan does not return his feelings. On their last tutoring day, they go out to an amusement park but ended up fighting because Ji-hoon overheard Su-wan telling a friend that there was no way she was going to date a high school kid (even if he was her age). He handsher a small parcel but ended up throwing it at the fountain since she would not take it.

Days passed. The bullies went out to hunt for Su-wan and kidnapped her. They were joined by a girl who was in love with Ji-hoon (you know the usual kontrabida girls). Of course Ji-hoon comes to Su-wans rescue and while they are running away from the gang, he sees that she is wearing the cross necklace he gave her. In the end, it was Su-wan who saved him as he was being thrown like a punching bag by gangmen.

Happily ever after? Of course. And Su-wan ends up tutoring Ji-hoon's cute little brother with Ji-hoon watching over and making sure he does not bully her.

And more happy news. KSW and KHN are appearing in a new movie together!!!!

Can't wait for that one.

wait a minute!

was i just drowsy with all the pre-fever meds i took? bakit hindi ko rin masabi na MAS gusto ko MTF kesa sa MSG? sure MTF is good and kilig too, pero MSG, parang mas feel ko? (the MTF action sequences didn't work for me, is it just me, or dapat nilagay na lang yung time for fist fights sa love angle ng movie? kulang eh)

but yeah, i must agree, the MTF guy is waaaaay cuter and far more interesting to look at!

ano yung movie na magkasama sila dalawa uli? meon na ba ako nuon?
